Adult Reading Program at Madison Valley Public Library

Check out what’s “Between the Covers” at Madison Valley Public Library’s first ever Adult Reading Program! The program will run January 23 thru March 22, and is open to any adult with a Madison Valley Public Library card. Library patrons may enter a drawing for a Kindle Touch e-book reader, Sansa Fuze MP3 players, and other fun prizes each time they read a book or listen to an audiobook checked out from the library. In addition, patrons may also enter the drawing each time they read or listen to an e-book or e-audiobook checked out from MontanaLibrary2Go.org. The drawings will take place March 22 at 3:00.

The library will host special programs Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. Feb. 2 – March 15. Program attendance is not required to enter the main prize drawing; however, there will be a door prize drawing and refreshments after each of the special programs.
The program schedule is as follows:
Feb. 2: Tracy Cook and Susanne Reymer from the Montana State Library will bring various “gadgets” to demonstrate (such as ipad, e-book readers, smart phones.
Feb. 9: Michelle Goggins will explain how to use the library’s laptop computer, Elmo, projector and screen for presentations.
Feb. 16: Using the Library’s website – all the information available on the website, such as the EBSCO Periodical Database, Heritage Quest and other links.
Feb. 23: Using the Card Catalog – how to search for items and place holds.
March 1: Using MontanaLibrary2Go.org for e-audiobooks
March 8: Using MontanaLibrary2Go.org for e-books.
March 15: Book discussion – what books have participants read during the Adult Reading Program – what do they recommend/not recommend.
March 22: Party and Prize drawings.

Our most requested Interlibrary Loan Item

INTERLIBRARY LOAN (abbreviated ILL, is the sharing of materials between participating libraries.) A patron of one library can borrow items such as BOOKS, DVDS and AUDIO CDS that are owned by another library. The patron makes a request with his/her local library, which locates and requests the desired item. Upon receiving the item, the library makes it available to the patron and arranges for its return. The lending library sets the due date and overdue/replacement fees of the material borrowed. Interlibrary Loan items are non renewable. In many cases, nominal fees accompany interlibrary loan services. At Madison Valley Public Library, the most requested Interlibrary Loan item is the DVD: DROP DEAD FRED.

"Fred" has traveled to 72 libraries across the U.S. Currently, there is a bulletin board in the Thexton Community Room displaying "Fred's" visits. Stop in for a look and a laugh!

Chippy the Dragon visits Madison Valley Public Library

On December 12, Diane Bunitski (who writes under the pen name of Diana Stauder) came to the library to talk about her series of books about dragons and show the game that she and her children created that inspired the series. After Lucy Ennis, the program hostess, read part of the first book Dragon's Journey: the beginning, Diane explained how the game was played. The children gathered round the board and were deeply involved in the game, but who should arrive but Chippy, one of the baby dragons from the book and from the game! He talked with us and truly charmed us with his tales (and tail). We could not believe that Chippy was tall as the lights and seemed so big that we were certainly glad he did not bring any of his brothers or sisters because they would not have fit in the room! After Chippy left, we kept on talking about him and looked at the books, game, and stuffed animals of him and his brothers and sisters. Before we left, Diane autographed any books we bought and told us that any time we need any dragon merchandise it is always for sale at Rank's Mercantile in Virginia City. Diane told us that Chippy has been very busy. He was in Dillon the night before and even had to dance there. He was planning to go to Rank's Mercantile later that same afternoon. We were so lucky that he managed to squeeze in a visit to our library!

The library has books 1 and 2 in the Dragon's Journey series, The Beginning and Adventures in the Sleepy Forest if you'd like to check them out.

Ennis Arts Association Donation

The Ennis Arts Association is a great non-profit organization whose main purpose is to bring together individuals interested in the arts and to promote and develop an appreciation of the arts in Madison County. The EAA has donated two DVDs: The art of portrait drawing with Joy Thomas, and Capturing light in acrylics with John Hammond. The EAA also donated two Junior drawing books: Ed Emberley’s drawing book: make a world and Ed Emberley’s drawing book of animals. These items are available for checkout. Hunters' Feed

The Ennis Community's "Hunters' Feed" (sponsored by the Ennis Chamber of Commerce) took place Friday, Oct. 21. Elaine Sober, the Library's Top Chef, made her delicious Green Chili with Venison and White Beans. Elaine and Kathy made Cheesey Biscuits to go along with the chili. The slow cookers were scraped clean (40 quarts!) before the end of the event! World Book Set

Summer Reading Program - Final Party!

July 15 was the big party to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program at Madison Valley Public Library. Everyone had so much fun at the Hawaiian-themed party! Kathy read "Aloha Dolores" by Barbara Samuels (which we borrowed from our partner library in Boulder). Then the kids had cups of fruit: grapes, cantaloupe and pineapple. The kids lined up so patently to take part in the fish beanbag toss, and to throw water balloons at the tree! Prize bags were given to each child, containing pencils, notepads and toys dealing with the theme "One World, Many Stories". Thank you to our wonderful helpers. The Summer Reading Program was a wonderful success!

Summer Reading Program - Switzerland

Jan Beekman gave a wonderful presentation about Switzerland on Friday, July 8. The kids got to watch a slide show and several short videos about Jan's recent trip to Switzerland. There were videos of a choir, a band, a parade, and even cow fighting! Jan showed us a huge, loud cowbell - and everyone got to try lifting it. It was very heavy. Each person shook a jar of cream 10 times, until it turned into butter. Jan even sang a Swiss song while playing her accordion. At the end of the program, everyone got a piece of Swiss chocolate. Thank you, Jan, for a very informative and entertaining program!

Summer Reading Program - Japan!

Michelle gave a program about Japan on Friday, July 1 as part of the Summer Reading Program "One World, Many Stories". Wearing a kimono, she showed everyone Japanese fans, chopsticks, and samples of origami. She read "K is for Kabuki: a Japan alphabet" by Gloria Whelean and "Wink: the ninja who wanted to be noticed" by J.C. Phillips. At the end, everyone got "Pocky Sticks", Japanese cookies coated with strawberry and chocolate!

Summer Reading Program - Norway!

Shirley Love and Mary & Paul Carlson gave a Summer Reading Program presentation about Norway on June 24. Shirley brought a "fishing troll", baseball cap, Norwegian knitted sweater, and a flag. Paul is a wood carver, and he brought his fabulous hand-carved trolls and a nisse. We learned that trolls have tails, and a nisse does not - but you'd better leave your nisse some porridge or cookies on Christmas, or there will be trouble! After hearing the Norwegian tale "The Three Billy Goats Gruff", many children reported (with great relief) that they do not have bridges in their yards! Therefore, no trolls! "Tusen Takk" Mary, Paul, and Shirley, for your wonderful program about Norway!

E-Reader available to check out!

Another exciting addition to Madison Valley Public Library is a Sony E-Reader, available for check out. The E-Reader will enable patrons to enjoy the downloadable e-books available through the MontanaLibrary2Go program. Patrons wishing to check out the e-reader will be asked to sign the E-Book Reader Policy and Agreement, which explains the rules of usage. If you are interested in trying the E-Book Reader, please ask to see the policy, and library staff can demonstrate how it works.

The Sony E-Reader was purchased by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library. This organization supports the Library in so many ways! If you would like to be part of the Friends of the Library, please come to the meeting the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00, in the Library's Thexton Community Room. New members are always welcome!

Summer Reading Program - China

Friday, June 17, Sherry Gold gave a presentation about China for the Summer Reading Program. She read the adorable story "Teddy and the Chinese Dragon" by Jan Morgenson. She taught everyone how to say hello - "Ni Hao" and how to count to ten. She showed an amazing video clip of Chinese children training and performing in a circus. The kids of Ennis were very impressed, with gasps of "How do they do that?" To finish, Sherry gave everyone a fortune cookie. Of course, everyone got to check out books about China, and other great subjects too. What a wonderful program!

Kids' Computer at Madison Valley Public Library!

A great new addition to the Children's area at Madison Valley Public Library is a "Kids' Computer Early Learning System"! The computer is perfect for young children, from babies to pre-school. It has a touch screen, tiny mouse, big button keyboard, and is not attached to the Internet. There are over 50 fun, educational games for kids to enjoy, such as: Giggles Baby ABC's & 123's, Animal Friends and Shapes, I SPY Junior, Dragon Tales, Reader Rabbit Toddler, Arthur's Math Games, and Clifford's Phonics. Please stop by the library with your children to enjoy this new, fun addition - we only ask that parents supervise their children while using the computer. This computer, and the custom built desk, were purchased by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library - another wonderful service provided by this wonderful organization!

Summer Reading Program - Mexico!

Friday, June 10 was the start of the Summer Reading Program at Madison Valley Public Library. Elena Korsmoe took us to Mexico! We started with a Spanish lesson about colors. Then Elena read the very entertaining "When the Pigs Took Over" by Arthur Dorros. Elena's son Sam was a very good sport, demonstrating how one of the characters in the book wore seven hats! After the story, Elena brought out a pinata! The kids took turns until the pinata broke open - and then everyone had candy! It was a really fun start to the Summer Reading Program - and of course everyone checked out lots of good books!

New! Books and Babies Program at Madison Valley Public Library

This new infant-toddler program will begin Wednesday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the Thexton Community Room at the Madison Valley Public Library at 210 East Main Street, Ennis. Parents, bring your little ones for books, music, songs, nursery rhymes, lullabies and toys!

Reading to your baby is a valuable way to spend precious time together. Although your new baby will not understand the words you read, your voice and your cuddling are exactly what she needs. Begin sharing books with your baby as soon as you begin to hold her in your lap. It is one of the most important things you can do to help your child learn language.

Be sure you like the books you are sharing and that you have a wide variety of board books. Visit the library to choose new books often! Soon you will find which books both you and your baby like best.

As it turns out, story time - the library's prime early language and literacy experience - is the perfect skill-building activity! Talking with children and sharing books with them are excellent ways to encourage the development of many of the skills in the kindergarten readiness categories - social and emotional, cognitive or thinking, behavioral management, approaches to learning, expressive and receptive language, phonological awareness and print knowledge, mathematics and physical development.

Preschoolers attending story time learn to response to verbal questions and instructions, and often develop a close relationship with library staff. This relationship sets positive expectations for a similar bond with their kindergarten teacher.

The earlier parents become involved in children's education, the greater the benefits. When parents participate in story time it sends a strong message to their children that what they are doing is important to Mom and Dad, too.

Please join us at the Madison Valley Public Library, starting Wednesday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. for Books and Babies. Regular story time is every Friday at 11:00.

Madison Valley Public Library Receives Will James Society Donation

This donation of 12 hardcover books to Madison Valley Public Library has been made through the Will James Society Gifting Program. It is the mission of the Will James Society to provide books written and illustrated by Will James in the western genre for readers of all ages to enjoy.

The Society donates books to schools and libraries throughout the United States and Canada. They also send "soft cover" versions to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you have an address of an individual person or military unit anywhere that would like to have some of these wonderful stories to read, just let the Will James Society know at the address below.

Donations are welcome from individuals to help the Society purchase more books at a generous discount through the Will James Art Company in Billings, Montana. Catie the Copycat

Madison Valley Public Library had a special guest for Story-Time March 11. "Grandma Juliana" aka Juliana Howard stopped by to read her book CATIE THE COPYCAT. She played her red ukulele and sang her original songs, ONE OF A KIND and WE'RE SWIMMING IN THE SAME SOUP. Everyone loved her wonderful performance!

MV Library Receives Libri Foundation Grant

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is honored to be a recipient of the Libri Foundation Grant, receiving $1404.18 worth of new, quality, hardcover books for children, juniors and young adults. The Libri Foundation's sole purpose is to help rural libraries acquire books they could not otherwise afford to buy. The contribution of $350 by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library was matched by the Libri Foundation on a 2 to 1 ratio.

In addition, the library received a bonus of $350 worth of math and science books, which were donated by Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman.

"These math and science books really helped update the children's non-fiction section, which was getting outdated due to the high cost of books," says Library Director Kathy Knack.

Library staff was able to select 87 books from the Foundation's 700-title booklist. The majority of the books were published within the last three years, but old favorites were also offered.

The Libri Foundation offers the "Books for Children" grant to libraries across the United States. Libraries may apply for the grant every three years. New Website

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis has a new website! Please visit www.mvlibrary.org to use the library's many on-line resources and to find out about the library.

With an Internet connection and a valid library card, library patrons may access the card catalog to renew materials, place holds, and see what items are new and available. Madison Valley Public Library is part of a sharing group which includes 9 other libraries: The Thompson-Hickman County Library in Virginia City, Sheridan Public Library, Twin Bridges Public Library, Dillon Public Library, Three Forks Community Library, Whitehall Community Library, Whitehall School Library, Boulder Community Library and Clancy Community Library. "The sharing group offers a huge variety of materials to our patrons," says Library Director Kathy Knack, "Patrons place holds using the on-line card catalog, and the items arrive at the library in about a week, thanks to a courier system that runs between these libraries." Patrons are welcome to ask library staff to place holds for them if they cannot access the card catalog.

Library patrons also have access to downloadble audio books and e-books from the MontanaLibrary2Go program. This program is hosted by the Montana State Library and powered by OverDrive. Funding for the very popular program was donated by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library. Anyone from Madison County may register for a library card and use this wonderful program. The library has a download station available for easy and convenient downloading of audio books during library hours. Library staff is always happy to assist with the downloading procedure.

There are several useful databases available on the website. Heritage Quest is available to those doing genealogy research. The Ebsco (Chilton's) audio repair and professional journals database contains an abundance of information. The Infotrac Periodical Database offers access to thousands of magazine articles, which can be helpful for students' research projects, finding information, or simply for entertaining reading.

The website has links to useful information about the library, such as current events in the library blog, details about the Library Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Library, the Book Group and various library policies. There is an application for using the Thexton Community Room. There are links to several community organizations, such as the Madisonian website, Town of Ennis and Madison County Emergency Information websites.

Spirit of Chrismtas - Ennis Christmas Stroll

The Friends of the Library participated in the "Spirit of Christmas - Ennis Stroll". Main Street, Ennis was filled with people enjoying an old fashioned Christmas Stroll. Merchants were open late, featuring Christmas treats and activities for all. Nearly 300 people stopped by the library for cookies & cider, and Christmas pop-up books read by Jacquie Arnold. Get Acquainted Reception for new on-line services

October 27, 2010 - Madison Valley Public Library hosted a "Get Acquainted Reception" for the new on-line audio books and e-books program, available on our website www.3rivers.net/~ennislib. The program is called MontanaLibrary2Go, and is powered by OverDrive.

The event was well attended by adults, children, and teenagers, all interested in learning how to use the new on-line service. Library staff gave indiviudal demonstrations on how to find, checkout and download audio books. Several people brought in their MP3 players or iPods so they could try the program. Refreshments were provided by the Friends of the Library. There were drawings for many fun items, including 2 new Sansa Fuze MP3 players!

If you would like a demonstration of the new program, stop by the library M-F from 9-5 or Sat 9-1. Library Staff will be happy to show off this new and exciting service!

Hunters' Feed

The Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library participated in the annual Hunters' Feed Oct. 22. Elaine Sober (in photo at right) made her famous Green Chili Chili, as well as Jalepeno Meatballs. The Elk-based dishes were delicious, as well as firey, and were served with Cheesey Biscuits made by Elaine Sober and Kathy Knack. Elaine Sober and Sandy Bullock made lots of yummy cookies for the event. Thank you Elaine, Kathy and Sandy, for your excellent culinary talents!

The Friends of the Library set up a booth outside the library with a raffle for a hunting knife from Shedhorn Sports, and a raffle for jewelry by Doris Zankowsky. Proceeds of the raffle went to benefit the library.

Downloadable Audio Books Available!

Madison Valley Public Library is pleased to announce that on-line audio books are available to download from the library’s website! Anyone with a Madison Valley Public Library card can access the thousands of titles available. Just visit the library’s website at www.3rivers.net/~ennislib and click on the “download audio books” link. The audio books may be downloaded to your computer at home, then transferred to an MP3 player or iPod. Some titles may be burned to CD as well. The titles may also be downloaded to various smart phones. There is a download station at the library, for easy access and transfer.

The on-line audio program is part of the Montanalibrary2go consortium group. The titles are shared with 45 libraries in Montana. About 300 new titles are added each month from a broad range of interests: adult best-sellers, non-fiction, young adult and children's books. There are many titles by Montana authors as well. A selection committee chooses the new titles to be added, and library patrons are encouraged to make their requests to library staff.

Please ask library staff if you need any help with the download service. We have been attending on-line training sessions. There is also on-line help available for the public.

This wonderful service was provided with funds donated by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library. What a great and innovative addition to our 5 Star library!

Thursday, June 24: The library had a celebration in honor of Phyllis Wasick’s service on the Library Board of Trustees.
Phyllis Wasick has been a dedicated Trustee for 12 years. She began serving when a former Board member moved away, and then she served 2 full terms of 5 years each. She served as Chairman of the Board for 9 years. Phyllis was instrumental in heading the many fundraising projects to construct the new facility. She saw the building project through from beginning to end, overcoming many obstacles along the way. Her steadfast dedication and gentle determination have made a great difference to this library and this community. Her term as a Trustee may be ending, but her service to this library will continue. Her next project will be to volunteer her time as President of the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library. Library Staff would like to thank Phyllis for her continued support and dedication. She is a great inspiration to us all!

Twelve Angry Men Reading

Thursday, June 24: The Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library sponsored a reading of the play "Twelve Angry Men" by Reginald Rose. This reading was in honor of the "We the People" Bookshelf Grant. Library Board Trustee Lucy Ennis applied for the grant, which commemorates the Civil War and civil rights in America. The reading was very successful and entertaining with the parts of the twelve angry "men" played by various community members - most of them women. Nineteen people in the audience enjoyed the reading. It was a unique experience for everyone involved. The play "Twelve Angry Men" is available at the library for check out.

Friday, June 11, Ron Hopper from the Ennis National Fish Hatchery gave a presentation about fish. The theme this year is “Make a Splash…Read!” The first program was a great success, with Jacquie Arnold’s amazing pop-up book collection. The kids enjoyed listening to Jacquie read several stories about underwater creatures, which came to life as they popped out of the pages! The children also got to look at the collection of books on their own. The room was filled with exclamations of “Wow! Look at this!” as the kids turned the pages of the fabulous books. Miniature Models Display

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is now displaying a Harley Davidson Freedom Chopper, a 1913 Model T Van, an A7 Corsair II, Robby the Robot from the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet, and many other interesting items! How did all these items fit in the library? They are miniature replicas of the originals, built by local model builder Ralph Durham. Ralph is the President of the Rocky Mountain Model Masters, a group which meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 at Rocky Mountain Hobbiez in Bozeman. The group is seeking new members, welcoming men, women and children who are interested in learning how to build models, as well as those with more advanced skills. Ralph is very enthusiastic about model building and about getting young people interested in the hobby. Model building develops 3D and spatial visualization and manual dexterity. It teaches basic carpentry and sometimes electrical skills, depending on the model. Builders learn about the history of their project and have a chance to be artistic by adding personal touches to the work. Rocky Mountain Hobbiez sponsors two contests each year, with prizes for the winners.

Barbara is originally from New Jersey and says she enjoys the small town atmosphere and sense of community she has found in Ennis. She is very active in the community as a member of the Ennis Arts Association, as well as with her hand beaded jewelry business “Jagged Rock Creations”. In addition to jewelry, she enjoys making baskets, hand felted hats, hand painted Christmas ornaments, and painting. Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is pleased to welcome Sherry Gold as our new part-time library aide. Sherry was hired through the Experience Works Program, which subsidizes a year of training to fill local job openings.

Thanks to Sherry and Experience Works, the Library will once again be able to have Saturday hours beginning Feb. 6, 2010!

Library hours in February will be Monday-Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 9-1. The Library is closed Sundays and all Federal holidays, including Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 15.

Stained Glass on Display

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is now displaying the stained glass artwork of Louise Getz. Louise and her husband moved to the Ennis area from Pennsylvania 12 years ago. She began working with stained glass about 8 years ago after taking a class in stained glass. She has done many projects, including hundreds of sun catchers, window panels, stepping stones, numerous hanging lamps and Tiffany style reproductions. Eco-Friendly Bags at the Library

The second eco-friendly bag painting day was lots of fun at Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis on Nov. 21. Lots of adults and children painted beautiful bags to give as gifts. The library has some beautiful new bags for sale, with proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Library. If you are looking for a unique, local, eco-friendly gift, Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis has canvas bags for sale. These bags can be used and re-used as book bags, shopping bags, or even as gift bags! The bags were donated by Judith Wiancko, and decorated by various local artists, including photography by Judith Wiancko. All proceeds will benefit Madison Valley Public Library.

Happy Birthday Ben Mikaelsen

On Tuesday, Nov. 24, Ben Mikaelsen celebrated his birthday in Ennis at the Madison Valley Public Library. For more than 45 minutes, he kept spellbound a packed Community Room at the library. The multi-aged audience (from babies to eighty-five year olds) responded to his gut-wrenching storytelling with a mixture of scattered laughter and empathetic tears. He captivated the crowd with tales of his childhood, his family, his struggles to fit in when he entered school as non-reader for the first time as a fourth grader, and the three people who made the biggest difference in his life: a pilot, a librarian, and a college professor. Several audience members remarked afterward, "He was the best public speaker I have ever heard!"

Bid on a Bag

Thirty-five aspiring artists met in the Thexton Community Room at the Madison Valley Public Library on July 22 to fabric paint shopping bags. The end result was a lot of fun, and every bag is unique - from whimsical to the sublime. The bags are on display at the library, and will be on silent auction from July 22 to Aug. 22. Visit the library to see and admire them. Bid on your favorite. All proceeds will benefit the library. When shopping, fabric bag usage is encouraged in lieu of paper or plastic bags.

Some members of the Ennis Arts Association came to the painting session to provide advise, support, inspiration, and paint bags. Kudos to helpers Gail Cole, Patsy Eckert, Donna Evans, Sherril Gold, Shirley Love, Adrian Megee, Carol McMullin, and Judith Wianko.

Local and summer people participated and there were painters from as far away as Boston, MA, Washington, California and Japan.

Clowns!

There was lots of "Clowning Around" during Story-Time on July 24th! Elaine Sober dressed up as a clown and entertained the crowd as they listened to clown stories. The kids especially enjoyed the story about the clown who lost her nose. Happily, the round, red nose was found at the end of the story!

Summer Reading Program Begins!

The Summer Reading Program “Be Creative @ Your Library” is underway at Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis. The program started Friday, June 5th with Jacquie Arnold’s Pop-Up Book Extravaganza. 65 adults and children enjoyed listening to a few stories, then browsing through at least 100 fantastic pop-up books. There were books that became entire doll houses, books with animals, insects and dinosaurs, and even books with volcanoes exploding out of them!

Charlotte Toppel’s Violin Magic was Friday, June 12th. Charlotte and some of her talented violin students entertained the crowd of 94 people with many familiar songs. Everyone sang along with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Old McDonald, Home on the Range, and more.

Both were wonderful programs, enjoyed by everyone!

Dedication of Madison Valley Public Library attracts crowd

It's been a long five-year project with frustrations and moments of elation. At last the final milestone in the culmination of all the hard work and wearisome hours has come to pass - the new Madison Valley Public Library was officially dedication on Saturday, June 6th.

The library has been open since last September, but as Phyllis Wasick, the Chair for the Library Board, said, "We thought that in the late spring the weather would be better and more summer people who had participated in funding the library would be back." There was no shortage of people to celebrate this major accomplishment, for nearly one hundred forty people crowded into the and outside of the Albert and Violet Thextoon Community Room where the dedication took place. Lucyann Ennis, who did the special presentations and dedication, looked around the room during her talk and commented that she wouldn't metion everyone's name because most of the people in the room had helped in some way. There was certainly a core driving force behind the library building project, but it was a community effort involving many individuals such as Jackie Kirtley who helped put the project "over the top." Special recognition was given to Stephanie Hagl, past President of the Friends of the Library, and Phyllis Wasick by presenting them with engraved Reed and Barton silver jewelry boxes.

Lucyann reinded us that the mission of the librry is "to collect, preserve and provide resources, programs and materials which will foster life-long learning, promote an appreciation of literature and enrich the lives of its patrons." Jo Forsberg, a patron, moved to Ennis in 19980 with her family and remembered how "the early library became a second home to us as well as being a Godsend to me." Her four-year old son had "a voracious appetite for reading, having taught himself to sight read at age three."

Being an active patron of the new library, I frequently see youngsters curled up on a bean bag chair, immersed in a good book. And often a parent is sitting right there next to them enjoying the experience just as much as their child. While the kid's section is furnished with bright colors and whimsical needlepoint pictures, the rest of the library is soothing with its earth tones and comfortable western-influenced furniture. first Madison Valley Bank's Mary Oliver admiringly stated that, "It's so inviting, it's gorgeous."

I'm rather smitten with the place, myself. Architect Time Peterson of L'Heureux Page Werner Achitecture, and builder Ron Pack of Sheridan's JDL Construction, did an outstanding job. And the way the interior was finished is the icing on the cake. On the techno side, the bank of six computers and free wireless internet for laptop users makes this library an up-to-date Mecca for all ages of technologically savvy people - or those that know just enough to get by.

It wasn't always this way. Shirley Love told a short history of the Ennis Library, as researched and written by Gary Forney, and reminded us that the Madison Valley Woman's Club made its first attempt to establish a library in the 1920's - long before the computer age. She said the third time was a charm and Beth Pendleton was hired as the first professional library and two rooms in the Bauer Apartments (site of present-day Town Pump) were acquired to serve as the library facility.

Today Kathy Knack presides as the Library Director, with Michelle Goggins, Assistant Director, Sandy Bullock, Library Aide, and Robert Combs, Library Aide trainee. Montana State Librarian, Darlene Staffeldt, and the Montana Statewide Consulting Librarian, Maggie Meredith, showed their support by attending the dedication. Staffeldt said, "It's a wonderful improvement, it shows what a community can do - it's beautiful."

After the dedication ceremonies were over, the crowd stayed and visited while partaking of finger food made by hostesses such as McAllister Mountaineers 4-H'er, Madaline Hagl. Others toured the library and looked at the dedication plaque on the right side in the entryway. now that the library is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., it will be even more accessible for the community. In her closing remarkds, Lucyann Ennis had said, "I hope you all have a library card. If not, why not get one before you leave today!" Sounds like good advice, Lucy!

The Friends of the Library recently completed a display of honorary plaques and photos for the Madison Valley Public Library. Photos of Albert and Violet Thexton were framed for display above the sign to honor the Albert and Violet Thexton Community Room. They were the original donors who began the fundraising drive for the new building. There is a special plaque to honor the architect, L'Heureux Page Werner, the builder JDL Construction, the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, and Library Staff. There is an additional plaque to honor the greatest donors, The Kendeda Fund and Al and Violet Thexton. Stop by the library to view this beautiful display!

New in the Thexton Community Room

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis had a few nice changes this week! George Ennis donated his time and talent to install the beautiful wooden shades in the Thexton Community Room and in the south reading area. These shades, purchased by the Friends of the Library, will prevent glare and overheating from the southern sunshine, and they are a wonderful addition to the library.

The Friends of the Library also purchased new carpet squares for the children to sit on during Story-Time. There is a different animal on each 12 X 12 square, from a happy penguin, to a funny monkey, and a hairy lion. The children were thrilled with the special seating “just for them”.

Miniature Artwork Display

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is honored to have the miniature artwork of Ennis artist Patsy Eckert in the display case. Patsy started painting in miniature 30 years ago. Montana was one of 12 states that had a Miniature Art Society, located in Billings. Though the group disbanded a number of years ago, there is still an annual miniature show held in Miles City. Patsy says that painting miniatures is a nice break from painting larger pieces. The small pieces allow original art to be affordable for the average person, save precious wall space, and can be put anywhere in any home. “These small works can be tedious, and take awhile to produce, but the end result is always rewarding.” says Patsy. On display are 14 original miniature paintings of the Madison Valley. Locations include Call Road, West Fork, South Meadow, and the Madison River. Each painting is displayed on a miniature easel. Stop by the Library to view this lovely display.

Teen Scene

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis now has a special place for Young Adults! A section of the library has been reserved as the “Teen Scene”, complete with a brightly colored couch and lamp for reading in the library. The Teen Scene sign was created and donated by Mariah Oliver. This area is filled with a growing collection of Young Adult books, including the very popular Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. If we don’t have the Young Adult book you’re looking for, please ask the librarian about placing a hold through the 4 Rivers Sharing Group. Suggestions of Young Adult authors are always welcome.

Open House

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis had a very successful Open House on October 3rd. All morning, classes from the Ennis Elementary School, Junior High and High School came to tour the library. In the afternoon, the general public was invited to tour the new library, and have refreshments in the Community Room. The comments were all very positive, with people very excited about this wonderful asset to the Town of Ennis! At the end of the day, over 500 people walked through the library!

Diana Beattie Interiors Makes Wonderful Donation to Library!

Diana Beattie Interiors of McAllister, MT and New York City, has made a wonderful donation of beautiful furniture and decorative items to the Madison Valley Public Library. There are chairs, couches, tables, lamps and paintings that make the library feel like a very comfortable place to read, study, and just browse for materials.

David Black, furniture designer, built some of the tables. Local artists Todd Conner, Pat Schutts, Ed Totten and Larry Zabel are represented by artwork now adorning the walls. Because of Diana’s generosity, Madison Valley residents are able to relax in very pleasant surroundings when they use the library.

We appreciate Diana Beattie for her very generous donations and her time, efforts and expertise to place these pieces. She brought her assistants Mel and Garl with her to install and they were so helpful. We also appreciate the local artists for their very generous donations to our beautiful facility.

Enhanced Vision Magnifying Reader

Madison Valley Public Library was pleased to receive a unique and considerate donation from some generous library supporters. Jess Armitage, Charles Wright, and Paul Hoff have donated a Merlin Enhanced Vision Magnifying Reader for use by library patrons. The reader enables individuals with low vision to read, write, view photos (and more) in color, black and white, or enhanced high contrast positive or negative viewing modes. The machine is simple to use, and is available for anyone using the library. For more information, please stop by the library, and ask a staff member to demonstrate the machine. Native American Legend Gourds Donated

Bev Martin of Jeffers has donated all of her painted Native American Legend Gourds to the library. They will be on display in the Montana Research Room and in the display case in the main hallway. Bev printed the stories that she has been sharing with our community for so many years, and displayed them in frames to go with each painted gourd. The legend gourds and stories are wonderful pieces of Montana and Native American history, and are a wonderful addition to the Montana Research Room.

The library opened its doors to the public on Monday, September 15! The library was closed for exactly two months, from July 14 to September 14, while the old section was remodeled. Volunteers put the library back together in two weeks from Sept. 1 - 14. Amazing! The new building is absolutely beautiful, and library patrons seemed very pleased with their new library!

On Friday night, Sept. 12, the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library had a thank you barbeque for the JDL Construction crews and subcontractors who worked on the new library. It was great fun to be able to celebrate the completion of the building with those who made it possible.

The building has been complete two months before the contract deadline, which is due to the dedicated work of all the crews. Dave Chrest and his framing crew were able to attend. They helped set the tone for this project by working every day but one during the sever weather we had in January 2008. After the barbecue, there wan an informal tour of the library. The framers were especially excited to see the completed library, because they rarely get to see the final results of their work.

Tree Removal!

The pine tree in front of Madison Valley Public Library was damaged during a severe wind storm recently. The Town of Ennis and the Library Board of Trustees decided to have the tree removed in order to protect the library building. The removal of the tree was very interesting. The branches were all removed first, then the trunk was brought down in small sections. Even though it was too bad to remove such a beautiful tree, the end result was quite impressive! The new building is more visible!

Madison Valley Public Library has had an exciting September so far! The JDL Construction crew finished their final bit of work, and a crew of staff and volunteers began putting the library back together. It took two weeks to make the library workable - although not completely in order. Staff will be completing the finsihing touches in the coming weeks.

Our crew of volunteers worked so hard to get the shelves re-assembled and the books put away in order. We appreciate everyone's dedication to the library - they gave their time, sweat, and even a little blood! Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is still closed for construction. Things are moving along quickly, but the date for re-opening is still unknown at this time. As soon as the date it known, it will be advertised. In the mean time, any checked out materials will automatically be renewed, so there is no need to worry about overdue notices. We appreciate everyone’s patience during construction and we are looking forward to re-opening the library soon!

Story-Time has been taking place every Friday at 11:00 a.m. at First Madison Valley Bank, across the street from the library. The bank has been so kind to us with the use of their community room for Story-Time every Friday for the past 9 months! The kids expressed their appreciation at Story-Time this week, by coloring thank you notes and pictures for everyone at First Madison Valley Bank! We are looking forward to having Story-Time at the new library soon!

Highlights of 2007-2008

June 2007 – The library received a Books For Children Grant from the Libri Foundation
July 14, 2007 – The 4th annual Fundraising Dinner was a great success. It was announced that the Kendeda Fund would offer the library a 1:1 matching grant up to $162,500.00 for funds raised from June 13 - Dec. 31. Therefore, the $13,000.00 raised during the auction was doubled!
October 2007 – The bids for construction were opened during the Town Council meeting. JDL Construction from Sheridan was selected.
November 9, 2007 – Stephanie Hagl read the last Story-Time in the old Children’s Room. (Story-Time to be held at First Madison Valley Bank until the new building is complete)
November 13, 2007 – Groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction!
November 2007 – The old section of the library was torn down.
December 28, 2007 – The floor of the new section is finished, water and plumbing are working! (6 weeks without plumbing!)
December 31, 2007 – The Kendeda Fund challenge grant has been met! The community raised $162,500.00, which was matched by the Kendeda Fund! The Kendeda Fund also donated an additional $122,000.00
February 2008 – The roof goes up! Sandy Bullock was hired as Library Clerk.
May 9, 2008 – Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher performs a concert to benefit the library expansion.
June 17, 2008 – Library patrons now use the new entrance to enter the building.

Moving and Closing

July 11th was the library's last open day for about 6 weeks (or so) while the final phase of construction is completed.

After the very successful fundraising dinner on July 12th, members of the Friends of the Library came back on the 14th to move books, disassemble bookshelves, and move furniture. It was a day of intense labor for everyone involved! Not only were the "Friends" working hard, but the construction crew was working around us, removing walls and light fixtures! It was a very exciting and exhausting day!

Everything in the library is now packed into 2 rooms: the Montana Research Room and the Community Room! Putting everything back together again will definitely be interesting!

Fundraising Dinner Successful!

The fifth annual Fund Raising Dinner to benefit the Madison Valley Public Library’s Building Fund was a great success! We were pleased to have so many people in attendance supporing the library. The diner, catered by Stuart Martin, was excellent. The auction was a lot of fun and successfully raised much needed funds for the library's interior furnishings.

Isn’t it gratifying and fun to be a part of a “Dream Come True”! This dream has become a reality because of so many people – the community support, grants, the Kendeda Fund, and friends all over the country; all who have believed in the project and persevered for the past five years. Thank you, Thank you!

Using the New Entrance!

As of June 17, library patrons have been using the new entrance at the library! Everyone has been very excited to see the beautiful tile in the walkway, and the beautiful carpet in the community room. It's a bit of a maze to find your way into the working part of the library right now - as the entrance takes people back past the restroom and mechanical room of the older section, but so far everyone has found their way! As the weather heats up, we are finding that the library is staying fairly cool inside - probably due to the new roof and superior insulation.

The 5th annual fundraising dinner will be held July 12, 2008 at the library. For more information, please contact the library at 406-682-7244. The theme of this year's dinner is "Dreams do Come True".

The library is making preparations for the final remodeling that will take place soon. The library is planning to close on July 14 for an extended period of 4-6 weeks. We are encouraging library patrons to come in during the week of July 7th to check out enough materials to get through this closure. There will be an extended check-out period, so no one will need to worry about overdues. We appreciate everyone's patience during construction! We are very excited about re-opening for business in the new building!

Summer Season Begins!

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis is enjoying a very busy summer tourist season, even with the inconvenience of construction! Summer in Ennis always begins with the arrival of the many international students who work at various businesses around town. They come to the library often to use the Internet to keep in touch with family and friends, as well as to check out DVDs, video cassettes and books that can help them with their English. It is so much fun to visit with them, learn about their countries, and to see some familiar faces when they return for a second summer. We are sorry that one of our favorite students, Bell from Thailand, is leaving at the end of June! If you had the opportunity to meet Bell, you know that she is a true “ray of sunshine”, even when it snowed today!
Construction will continue throughout the summer, and we are planning an extended closure sometime during July. The exact dates are unknown, but will be advertised as soon as possible. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during construction!

Contruction Continues!

Construction is still underway at Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this very exciting and unpredictable experience! The library will be closed on Saturdays during the months of June and July, until further notice. (Hours are Monday – Friday from 9-5.) We are getting ready for an extended closure of 4 weeks or more this summer – estimated to be sometime in July. However, the exact date of the closure is still unknown. We are going to try to make this closure as convenient as possible for library patrons, with an extended checkout period of unlimited items. The Summer Reading Program 2008 at Madison Valley Public Library will be a little different this year. The library will continue to be under construction this summer, but we want to encourage students to keep reading all summer long!
Students who read 10 books during the summer, any time between June 1st and August 31st, should write them down on the book log (available at the library), and bring it to the library to receive prizes!
Everyone is welcome to participate, including parents or care-takers who read to children.

Concert Benefits Library Expansion

A crowd of nearly 100 people attended the live performance of Peter Fletcher, classical guitarist, the evening of May 9th. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful music, which was enhanced by the excellent acoustics of the First Madison Valley Bank lobby. The event was sponsored by the Friends of the Madison Valley Public Library and the Madison Valley Cultural Corporation, and all proceeds went to the Library Building Expansion Fund. It was really special to have such a talented artist, who just held a concert at Carnegie Hall, right here in Ennis. Thank you to everyone who helped with this wonderful evening of music!

Furnishings Being Planned For New Library

Madison Valley Public Library is under construction, and things are moving along quickly! It’s not time to move in yet, but library staff is already making plans for the new space. Two local carpenters, Steven Badura and Chuck Stoltz, were hired to design and build 10 rolling bookshelves for the new library. These shelves, which will be used to hold children’s books, are handicapped accessible and kid-friendly. The shelves can be moved easily on their rollers to make room for activities in the Children’s area. Steven Badura said, “We enjoyed the project and appreciated the chance to add something personal to the new library. We also appreciate Ray Plante for donating the edging material.” These bookshelves were purchased with funds donated by the Kendeda Fund. Staff is very excited about filling these shelves full of wonderful children’s books! But, for the moment, the shelves are being stored in a local storage unit, which was donated for library use.

Library Receives Computer Grant

Madison Valley Public Library has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to upgrade one of the public access computers. The grant will allow the library to sustain free, high quality access to computers and the Internet for library patrons.
“Computers and Internet access has become one of the key services that our patrons demand most,” said Library Director Kathy Knack. “It is critical that we have the resources necessary to sustain this service so that our library can help Madison Valley residents and visitors access the information they need to live engaged, successful lives.”
The grant is part of the foundation’s U.S. Library Program, which supports the efforts of public libraries to offer free access to computers, the Internet, and digital information in communities throughout the United States.
“Libraries deserve to have the necessary resources to provide library patrons with efficient technology,” said Martha Choe, director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Libraries program. “It is now important for libraries to receive continued support from the community – government, businesses, and citizens – to maintain this technology and provide upgrades in the future.”
Madison Valley Public Library is located at 210 East Main Street, Ennis, and serves more than 10,000 computer users each year.

Construction Update

Construction continues at Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis! The shell is up, and now the crew can work on the inside! It's very exciting to see the different rooms - The Community Room (pictured above) will have wonderful light with the nice, big windows! The main book area (pictured on bottom) will have so much more space! It's hard to believe that the area behind the little white door contains the entire library right now! We really are bursting at the seams and can't wait to expand into the new area!

Kendeda Fund donates an additional $122,000 to Library!

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis was pleased to receive another fabulous donation from the Kendeda Fund! An additional $122,000.00 was donated by the generous, anonymous donor! This amount was received after the original $162,500 matching grant was matched by the community, bringing the total donation by the Kendeda Fund up to $284,500.00. What an excellent gift to our community! We are so grateful for the kindness of the Kendeda Fund donor, as well as for the generosity of everyone who has donated to the building fund.

We have walls!

JDL Construction has been working hard, in quite unpleasant weather conditions, and the new addition to the library now has walls! It really feels like things are moving along quickly now. Bad weather, including -20 degree days, winds up to 30 MPH, and severely drifting snow, slowed construction down for awhile in January. But, the crew is keeping at it whenever they can, and progress is being made!

Library hours during construction are Monday - Friday from 9-5. Even with the slightly reduced hours, library usage increased by 233 compared to Jan. 2007! During the month of January, 2008, patrons checked out 1816 books, 833 children's books, 656 videos & DVD's and 134 audio books. We also lent 30 books through Interlibrary Loan.

Stop by at 210 East Main Street, Ennis, to check the progress, take a break from the wind, and find a good book, DVD, video or audio book at the library!

Clancy Community Library Joins Sharing Group

We would like to welcome the Clancy Community Library to the MSC 4 Rivers Sharing Group. They joined Madison Valley Public Library, Thompson-Hickman County Library, Sheridan Public Library, Twin Bridges Public Library, Three Forks Community Library and Whitehall Community Library on January 14th. Now patrons from all of the above libraries can place holds on items from Clancy. (As well as from all of the above libraries.) Lucky Dog Winner!

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis was pleased to be selected as the “Lucky Dog Winner” by Center Point Large Print Books! The library won 6 new large print books, which will be arriving soon. Large print books are excellent for those who have low vision, as well as for those who don’t. The library offers many titles in large print that are not available in regular print, so if you are looking for a book by a favorite author, be sure to check the large print section.

Madison Valley Public Library in Ennis has very exciting news! The Kendeda Fund Challenge Grant has been met! Our community raised the $162,500, which will be met by the Kendeda Fund! What an achievement! We appreciate all the wonderful donations that made this possible, and we are especially grateful to the Kendeda Fund.
